Mark Wahlberg has changed and isn't racist anymore

I should point out that I kind of love Mark Wahlberg - Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch was awesome (screw you guys, I love Good Vibrations!) er, but I had no idea about his checkered past.  I have a real issue with racism so I was pretty horrified to read some of the story floating around about him right now.  On the other hand, how much time needs to pass before we give someone a second chance?

In 1988 Mark knocked out a middle-aged Vietnamese man with a large stick and called him a:
"Vietnam f*cking sh*t" and then that same day while trying to steal alcohol hit another Vietnamese man so hard he blinded him in one of his eyes.  When the cops caught up with him he was quoted as saying "you don't have to let him identify me, I'll tell you now that's the motherfucker whose head I split open" with the rest of the police report filled with reference to "slant-eyed gooks."

This story feels a little like it should be under the heading #CrimingWhileWhite as Mark was charged with attempted murder, copped a plea and spent 45 days in jail.

Now however he's doing community service as part of outreach programs and his record is hindering him from being active in helping at risk-individuals (it falls under law enforcement, and you can't be in law enforcement with a record).  So he's asking for a pardon.

Mark hent on to say that he's asking for, “...formal recognition that I am not the same person I was on the night of 8 April 1988 … My hope is that, if I receive a pardon, troubled youths will see this as an inspiration and motivation that they too can turn their lives around and be formally accepted into society.”

His formal application can be found here.

I don't know. Mark has never made reperations to the man he blinded even though he's now a millionaire, he has never apologised... but if I was judged on the person I was at 16 and the incredibly stupid things I did at that point in time out of ignorance... that's a scarey thought.

What do you think, should Mark be pardoned?
